Editor cannot remove LABEL completely

so I have a config file which I've edited to include:

NODE DEFAULT
 LABEL {node:this:name}

However, when I add a node using the editor, the default for label is
'Node'.  I remove it, and the config file ends up with a blank label
and the node dissapears.  I go back into the config file and remove
the label line and it reappears in the editor.  When I edit that node
in the editor, it does have {node:this:name} in the LABEL field.  It
looks like the 'new node' editor option isn't picking up on the fact
that the file already has a DEFAULT for NODE LABEL...?
